After a glass of drink,
we speak of the life of Virginia Woolf,
and of the hem of the lady’s dress
as she rode away upon a wooden horse.
The wooden horse abandoned its rider
and went off into autumn,
ringing only its little bell.
A star falls from the bottle.
The wounded star
breaks lightly against my breast.
For a little while,
the girl I once knew
grew beside the plants in the garden.
When literature dies,
when life dies,
when even the truth of love
casts away the shadow of love and hate,
the beloved who rode the wooden horse
is nowhere to be seen.
Time comes and goes.
Once, avoiding isolation,
we withered away,
and now
we must say farewell.
Listening
to the bottle fall in the wind,
we must gaze into the eyes
of the aging woman writer.
……At the lighthouse……
Even if no light can be seen,
for the sake of the future
of the pessimism we have kept within us,
we must remember
the forlorn sound of the wooden horse.
Whether everything leaves
or everything dies,
holding only to the faint awareness
that remains in the heart,
we must listen
to the sorrowful story of Virginia Woolf.
Like a snake passing between two rocks
in search of its youth,
we must open our eyes
and drink another glass.
Life is not even lonely.
It is merely commonplace,
like the cover of a magazine.
What is there in our lament
that frightens us so,
that we must leave?
The wooden horse is in the sky,
and its bell
clangs beside my ears.
And the autumn wind
chokes and weeps
inside my fallen bottle.
