I arrived at the harbor on foot.
A long wind from the cold country
shakes the houses by the sea,
and as though a long snow were about to fall,
the lights glow low, lower still.
A neatly printed picture
on a sheet of spirit money
I crumple into my pocket, and extinguish
a half-smoked cigarette like a shadow.
With a quiet heart,
I go down to where the boats are.
The dark keels at anchor all raise their heads
and peer into the harbor.
In the dark sky,
two or three snowflakes— the birds of heaven
follow after them.
