When summer comes
and the white onion blossoms bloom,
I will go to Myeonggyori by the sea.
Following the scent of onion flowers,
which, with the slightest touch,
brushes the tip of the nose like sorrow,
I will go to Myeonggyori,
where, they say, one reaches the end of the world,
and there I will meet the sea
calling my name.
The rock where, as a child,
I stumbled on my way to ask for salt
after wetting the bed,
and the family of my mother’s home,
who scattered silver salt
over my shame and sorrow—
they are all gone now,
but if I put my hand
into the rustling sandbar,
the cold spring of tears
will still rise.
Following again
the scent of onion blossoms
that touches the nose like sorrow,
I will wear the old winnowing basket of longing
and go ask for salt once more.
To the rolling summer sea,
I will give
the blue wings of memory.
